Clean your car headlights

Who says Pinterest is just for we ladies?

My husband absolutely loves when it is my week to post here at madefrompinterest because he knows he will be in for some great stuff! Whether it is a new dinner recipe or some new fangled dessert, he is happy to be experimented upon!

In his own male way, he has endorsed and embraced Pinterest and the other day he was wondering if there was anything on Pinterest that showed how to clean the protective cover over his car headlights.

Why yes, honey. Yes there is!

Taking instructions from a pin that I pinned from Snapguide, the best thing about the directions is that it takes only one ingredient.  And that one ingredient is………toothpaste!

Our local grocery store had a sale on Crest toothpaste for $1.00 so I grabbed a tube and off I went to tackle our headlights.  With a paper towel, I covered the entire headlight area with the toothpaste.  Then I took a sponge that had a rough side on one side and lightly rubbed over this area.

Wash the toothpaste off with some warm water and look at the results!Who says Pinterest is just for ladies? Here is a great pin for the man in your life. With Father's Day fast approaching, why not clean his car headlights? With just one ingredient and very little elbow grease! madefrompinterest.netThis little favor made the hubster so excited!  You know how men are about their cars.  And now he loves Pinterest even more!

Sometimes a gift of your time makes the best gifts.  Wouldn’t Dad love to come out to find his headlights this sparkling clean?   For some other Father’s Day cleaning ideas, check out these posts:

However, I felt a little guilty that I only cleaned his headlights.  I should really finish the job and wash and wax the whole car, right?

Nah.

I’d rather go inside and brush my teeth with my new toothpaste.

I promise that the Dad in your life will agree that This Pin Rocks!

Disclaimer:  If the cover over your headlights is super scratched, your results will not be as good as this process only cleans the headlights and doesn’t buff the scratches out.  Just sayin.

  1. Oh my gosh!!! I’m sending this to my husband, ASAP! :-) Thank you!
    Visiting from Mouthwatering Monday!

  2. Very timely! I just got back from a bug-infested trip. Bugs smeared all over the headlights. I’ll have to try this.

  3. Oh my goodness!! This looks amazing — will definitely have to give this a try!

  4. That is a great idea, I know my hubby will love it, too!!

    • Hi Michelle, Yeah I couldn’t believe the little smile when hubby saw his headlights. It made his day! Thanks for stopping by! Deb – The Oldest Sister

  5. Wow! What a difference. The only thing is mom, I’m not sure you should admit that you didn’t have toothpaste at the house already! And then that the only reason you went to the store was to try it out on your headlights. (Brushing your teeth was actually an afterthought wasn’t it?) Just sayin….

  6. I loved the tip on how to clean the tray on my fridge water dispenser! So I wil have to tell my hubby to try this on his car headlights! For some reason the headlights have a fog on the glass that just doesn’t come clean no matter what he does! He will be happy dancing if this works on his headlights! Thanks Debbie!

    • Lillian….you are a sweetheart! Hope this works so we might get a chance to see your hubby do a happy dance! Deb – The Oldest Sister

  7. Donna Duffy says:

Does it matter what kind of toothpaste it is there is so many different ones out there

    • Hi Donna! I did mine that was regular toothpaste with a stripe of gel in it. I wouldn’t use a completely gel toothpaste but I think any white toothpaste would do! Thanks for stopping by! Deb – The Oldest Sister

  8. To clean bugs off the grill and Paint of the car…Put in a spray bottle a Dryer Sheet and let it sit for a few minutes. Now spray the grill and painted areas where you find all the bugs then follow up with a clean soft cloth. It is amazing how slick this is when the bugs are built up from a long trip. Try it!….

  9. Amazed at all the comments from people whose, “husband will love this”. Don’t any women care about their own cars? I am going to go try this myself tomorrow.

  10. I tried this and it didn’t work. I’m very saddened!

    • Oh Sara, I am so sorry. I don’t know if your headlights have scratches because it won’t work if they are heavily scratched but if it’s just dirt and bug guts then it should work great. Deb

  11. WD-40 works as well! Spray some on a towel, wipe, and you have similar results! Something my father taught me.

  12. Laura Fogle says:

    Hello,
I am going to try this. I hope it works as well on my headlights. The only thing is, I’ve heard that when this technique is used, the headlights will oxidize faster between treatments. Also, that you are really supposed to wax and buff them afterward to protect them. Again, great tip. I want to try because my headlights are so bad, you can almost see the shadow of the car behind me, in front of me because their lights are so much brighter than mine!!! This would be much cheaper than buying new headlights. :D
