DIY – Make Your Own Gatorade

Is there something that your husband loves?  Or maybe a few things that he enjoys?  Here are a few of my husband’s favorite things:  Snow skiing, ice cream, grandkids and Gatorade.  Boy does he LOVE himself some Gatorade!  Myself, I don’t particularly care for it.  I mean, it’s okay but it’s not really my drink of choice.  But he LOVES it! Especially on a Saturday after he has mowed the front and back lawns and is dripping with sweat.

So in an effort to maybe save a few cents on this stuff, I pinned this recipe to make your own Gatorade from Daily Garnish.  And wow!  It was so easy!  Here’s the lineup of ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • water

In a microwave safe bowl, add the 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 tsp kosher salt to 1 cup of water and put in the microwave for 1 minute.  After the minute take out of the microwave and stir the mixture to make sure that the salt and sugar has dissolved.

Pour this mixture into a container of your choice.  I used our empty Powerade bottles which made me happy to think that we are reusing and recycling!  Then add the orange juice and lemon juice and add some ice to cool your mixture down.  I used about 8 ice cubes:

Now all you have to do is fill the rest of the bottle with water!  This recipe makes 32 oz which is the size of most Gatorade and Powerade bottles.  Perfect!

After reading all of the comments on the original blog of this recipe, some people had suggested possibly using honey instead of sugar. So I made a honey version and a sugar version.  The honey version had a VERY strong honey taste, so next time when I use honey, I would cut down the amount of honey and see how that works.  I also wanted to try making this with Stevia and see how that tastes.  If you try this with Stevia, I’d love to know how it turned out for you.

So now we have some Homemade Gatorade in the fridge and after it cooled down, it was extremely light and refreshing! This recipe is perfect for a work out, a bike ride or…..even sweating while mowing the lawn.

I’m sure my hubby would say that This Pin Rocks!
